About Dr. Ralph Salzer
Ralph Salzer, MD, is a joint, hand, and general orthopaedic surgeon at Beaufort Orthopaedic Sports & Spine, serving patients at the Beaufort, Bluffton, and Hilton Head, South Carolina, locations. A native of New Orleans, Louisiana, he established the practice in 1987.
Dr. Salzer received his undergraduate degree at the University of New Orleans and completed his medical training at Tulane University. In 1986, he completed his orthopaedic residency at Tulane University and its affiliated hospitals. He received sports medicine training at the Hughston Clinic in Columbus, Georgia, under the direction of Dr. Jack Huston and Dr. James Andrews. Dr. Salzer is board certified and a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and the South Carolina Orthopaedic Association.
He established the first orthopaedic practice in Beaufort, which emphasizes principles of sports medicine. These principles utilize physical therapy extensively, and surgeries are only done in the context of the rehabilitation process. Although many of these techniques were originally developed for athletes, Dr. Salzer has applied these principles to problems that are common to the general population.
Dr. Salzer takes a particular interest in teaching his patients about their orthopaedic problems so that patients can become participants in their own health care. He has a broad range of interests in orthopaedics and approaches every patient on a comprehensive basis. Whenever possible, he focuses on non-operative treatment and improving patients’ conditioning and flexibility before surgical consideration.
Dr. Salzer has a surgical interest in sport problems, including arthroscopy of the knee with reconstruction, or rotator cuff disorders due to the impingement process. He also has expertise in hand surgery, treating a wide variety of hand disorders. Although he was trained in spine surgery, he focuses on the non-operative conservative management of spine disorders. When surgery is needed, he refers to his partner, Scott Strohmeyer, MD.
Dr. Salzer and his wife, Catherine, reside in Beaufort, where they have five wonderful children, now prospering adults. In their free time, they enjoy all that the Lowcountry has to offer.
